Consular Services
Notice to Icelandic citizens
Icelandic citizens resident in South Africa are requested to register their names and contact details with the Embassy. This is important to ensure they receive information which can affect their rights. Messages are sent to those citizens who appear on the mailing list to inform them on such issues as:
- Elections: absentee voting ballots may be cast at Iceland´s embassies and consulates, but only if the prospective voter remains registered.
- Passports: biometric passports have been introduced in Iceland.
- The validity of older passports can be extended up to one year beyond their original date of expiry.
- Emergency passports have limited validity and should be used only to return to Iceland or to those places where passports can be issued.
In times of crisis outside of Embassy working hours, Icelandic citizens may call the Ministry for Foreign Affairs emergency line (open 24/7) +354 545 9925
