Often called "Iceland in Miniature," the Snæfellsnes peninsula packs glaciers, lava fields, black beaches, fishing villages, and a legendary volcano into one stunning drive.
This guide is for trip planning, not emergency guidance. Conditions in Iceland can change quickly—always check official alerts and road conditions before you drive or hike.

Snæfellsjökull National Park
The 1,446-meter glacier-capped stratovolcano is the setting for Jules Verne's Journey to the Center of the Earth (1864). Guided summit hikes available June–August. Vatnshellir lava cave tour (~3,750 ISK) departs hourly from a trailhead on Route 574.
Arnarstapi to Hellnar (2.5 km coastal trail)
A scenic cliff-top walk between two fishing hamlets. Gatklettur sea arch, nesting fulmars and kittiwakes, and Bárðar Saga monument at Arnarstapi. Allow 1–1.5 hours round trip.
Búðakirkja to Borgarnes (90 km, ~1.25 hrs)
Route 54 south coast, with about 15 km of gravel between Búðir and Arnarstapi. Búðakirkja black wooden church (rebuilt 1848) is one of Iceland's most photographed buildings. Fuel at Borgarnes to close the loop.
Getting There
From Reykjavík, drive north on Route 1 through the Hvalfjörður tunnel (toll tunnel, saves 60 km) or around the fjord. Turn west onto Route 54 at Borgarnes. The main peninsula loop follows Route 54, which circles the entire peninsula. Total drive from Reykjavík to Stykkishólmur is about 170 km (2 hours). The peninsula loop itself is approximately 100 km. Most roads are paved, with some gravel sections along the south coast of the peninsula.
Best Time to Visit
Summer (June–August) offers the best conditions with long days, all roads open, and boat tours in Breiðafjörður bay. The midnight sun illuminates Kirkjufell beautifully. Winter (October–March) is quieter and dramatic, with northern lights over Kirkjufell being a bucket-list photograph. However, the mountain pass between Ólafsvík and Grundarfjörður can close in winter storms. Spring (May) brings nesting seabirds to the cliffs near Arnarstapi. Year-round, the peninsula rewards visitors who spend at least one night.
