How to Get to Patreksfjörður

Driving from Reykjavik

The drive from Reykjavik is approximately 400km (5-6 hours). Take Route 1 north, then Route 60 through Búðardalur and over Dynjandisheiði pass. Alternatively, take the Baldur ferry from Stykkishólmur to Brjánslækur (2.5 hours), then drive 40 minutes to Patreksfjörður.

Road Conditions

The main roads to Patreksfjörður are paved, but roads to Látrabjarg and Rauðasandur are gravel. Kleifaheiði pass south of town can be challenging in winter. The road to Látrabjarg often closes in deep winter. Always check road.is before departure.

Best Time to Visit Patreksfjörður

Summer (June-August)

The only time for puffin watching at Látrabjarg (birds present May-August, best June-July). Midnight sun, all roads open, and Rauðasandur is stunning. Weather mildest (8-15°C).

Shoulder Season (May, Sept)

Early May has puffin arrivals. September means no puffins but northern lights. Roads may be variable. Fewer tourists. Expect 4-10°C temperatures and occasional rain.

Winter (Oct-April)

Limited appeal—road to Látrabjarg often impassable, no puffins. Only 4-5 hours daylight in December. Town services remain open. Good for northern lights if weather cooperates.
