The Bridge Between Continents (Brú milli heimsálfa) is a small footbridge on the Reykjanes peninsula in southwest Iceland that symbolically connects the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates. Built in 2002, the 15-meter bridge spans a fissure in the Leif the Lucky Bridge area at Sandvík, where the Mid-Atlantic Ridge rises above sea level. Iceland is one of the few places on Earth where the Mid-Atlantic Ridge is visible on land, and the Reykjanes peninsula offers some of the most accessible examples of this plate boundary. The surrounding lava field, part of the Reykjanes UNESCO Global Geopark, is criss-crossed with fissures and rifts that vividly demonstrate the tectonic forces shaping Iceland.

Getting There

The Bridge Between Continents is located near Sandvík on the Reykjanes peninsula, about 20 minutes' drive south of Keflavik International Airport and roughly 50 minutes from Reykjavik. Take Route 41 from Keflavik toward Grindavík, then follow Route 425 south toward the coast. The bridge is signposted and has a small parking area. It makes an excellent stop on the way to or from the airport, or as part of a Reykjanes peninsula day trip.

Best Time to Visit

The Bridge Between Continents is accessible year-round and the visit takes only 15-30 minutes. The Reykjanes peninsula is exposed and windy, so dress warmly regardless of season. Summer offers the longest daylight and mildest weather for exploring the surrounding geopark. Combine with visits to Gunnuhver hot springs, Reykjanesviti lighthouse, and the nearby coastline for a full Reykjanes experience. The site is rarely crowded as it is less visited than Golden Circle attractions.
