How to Get There

  • Route 1 (Ring Road) passes directly through the valley between Akureyri and Blönduós
  • About 40 km west of Akureyri, the valley takes 30 minutes to drive through
  • The Öxnadalur pass at the southern end can be snowy in winter — check road.is
  • No need for a detour — you drive through the valley on any Ring Road circuit
  • Pull-offs along the road allow stops for photography of the dramatic mountain scenery

  • June-August: Snow-free mountain peaks, wildflowers, best conditions for photography
  • September: Dramatic autumn skies and golden hillside vegetation
  • Winter: The mountain pass can close temporarily during storms — always check road.is

  • Year-round: Drivable in all seasons via Route 1, though winter requires caution at the pass
