The valley at the head of Dýrafjörður fjord is steeped in saga history and surrounded by some of the Westfjords' most dramatic mountains. Near the village of Þingeyri, this area is the setting for Gísla saga, one of Iceland's great medieval sagas about the outlaw Gísli Súrsson. Towering mountains flank the valley, offering excellent hiking trails with stunning views of the fjord and surrounding peaks.

How to Get There

  • Route 60 follows the fjord shore to Þingeyri village in the Westfjords
  • About 30 km (30 minutes) from Ísafjörður via the Vestfjarðagöng tunnel
  • From Reykjavik, approximately 450 km (6-7 hours) via Route 1 and Route 60
  • Flights to Ísafjörður from Reykjavik take 40 minutes, then drive south to the valley
  • The road is fully paved year-round, though winter conditions require caution

Best Time to Visit

  • June-August: Hiking trails in the Westfjords Alps open, Simbahöllin café at full swing
  • July: Best for mountain hiking including Kaldbakur (998m), longest daylight
  • September: Northern lights season begins, dramatic autumn mountain scenery
  • October-April: Valley accessible but hiking limited, services reduced in Þingeyri
  • May: Snow lingers on peaks but valley floor greens up, fewer visitors than peak summer
