Landmannalaugar: Hot Springs & Rhyolite Mountains in Iceland's Highlands
A Highland paradise of colorful rhyolite mountains, natural hot spring bathing, and the starting point of Iceland\u2019s legendary Laugavegur trek.
Highland F-roads required. Check road.is for opening dates. River crossings can be dangerous\u2014never cross a river you are unsure about. Weather in the Highlands changes rapidly.
F-roads typically open late June; dates vary by year
From Reykjavík via Route 26 and F208 (3–4 hours)
What to Expect
Natural Hot Stream (36-40°C)
Geothermal water at up to 80°C mixes with a cold river to create 36-40°C bathing. Water shoes recommended for the rocky bottom. Move upstream for warmer water
Rhyolite Mountains
Brennisteinsalda and surrounding peaks display vivid swirls of pink, green, yellow, and blue from iron, sulfur, and silica in the 100,000+ year old volcanic rock
What to Bring
Swimsuit, towel, water shoes, warm waterproof layers, sun protection, food and water (no shops), and a sleeping bag if staying overnight. Come fully self-sufficient
Free Hot Spring Access
The natural hot spring is free to use. Campsite fee is approximately 2,000 ISK per night. Mountain hut bunks must be pre-booked through Ferðafélag Íslands
4WD Access Only (F-roads)
Reached via F208 (north, river crossings) or F225 (south, easier). 4WD with high clearance required. Rental insurance often excludes river crossing damage
Day Hikes Available
Multiple shorter trails explore Brennisteinsalda (the most colorful mountain), Bláhnúkur (blue peak), and obsidian lava formations within 2-4 hours
Getting There
From Reykjavík, the drive is approximately 190 km (3-4 hours). Take Route 1 east then Route 26 south toward Sprengisandur. Turn onto F208 from the north (multiple river crossings, more challenging) or take Route 26 to F225 via Sigalda from the south (generally easier, fewer crossings). A 4WD vehicle with high clearance is required for both routes -- rental car insurance typically does not cover river crossing damage. The nearest services are at Hrauneyjar Highland Center (40 km south). Highland buses from Reykjavík (Trex, Reykjavík Excursions) run scheduled summer services for those without 4WD. A large gravel parking area is available at the site. Roads are typically open late June to mid-September -- always check road.is before departure.
Best Time to Visit
Late June through early September only. Late June: F-roads may just be opening -- check road.is daily. River levels can be dangerously high from snowmelt. July: the most reliable month with warmest highland weather (8-15°C), driest conditions, and the most vivid rhyolite colors in direct sunlight. Book huts months in advance. August: still excellent conditions with slightly fewer visitors in late August. The hot spring is especially rewarding in cool or rainy weather when the temperature contrast is greatest. September: roads may close early depending on weather. Come fully prepared for rapid weather changes -- highland temperatures can drop below freezing even in summer.
